Desolate Angel, his thesis, became a biography of Jack Kerouac published by Random House in 1979. It brought him to the attention of Jerry Garcia, who tapped McNally to be the band’s official biographer in 1980. McNally assumed publicist duties in 1984 and worked for the organization until 2008.
